Lunkarya Guinea Pig
The Lunkarya is a variation of the Peruvian guinea pig and was discovered in Sweden. Not a product of crossbreeding, this long, thick, curly, ‘sheep-haired’ guinea pig is actually the result of genetic mutations. The strange variations found in the coat of the original Lunkarya were then passed on to his offspring. Potentially taking the term ‘bad hair day’ to the extreme, this crazy haired guinea pig will definitely need regular grooming! Its coat is also very thick, so you must be very careful to prevent heatstroke in hot weather.
| APPEARANCE: Thick, long and curly hair, often sticking out in all directions and rather sheep-like!
| ALTERNATIVE NAMES: Can be known as ‘Lunks’ for short.
| FUN FACTS: There are three variations to this breed, giving them different coat characteristics: Lunkarya Peruvian (long lock of hair on forehead), Lunkarya Coronet (crest on forehead), Lunkarya Sheltie (a wave to the hair down its back).
| PERSONALITY: Inquisitive, gentle and mild mannered.
| HANDLING: Their calm temperament should make them easy to handle.
| GROOMING: Very regular grooming required! Brush hair at least every other day, to prevent tangling and debris getting stuck in the curls.
