Cage Sizes for Guinea Pigs

Cage Size

Bigger Is Always Better!

It should go without saying, but we will anyway, the bigger the cage you have the better it will be for your guinea pigs – it’s as simple as that. Below is our quick sizing guide:

Please note, these are our recommended minimum sizes.

ONE GUINEA PIG

Approx. 1m squared; 2 x 4 grid C & C cage

Note: Whenever possible, please keep guinea pigs in at least a pair unless you have a very good reason to separate them (e.g. they are fighting). Guinea pigs are very sociable animals and need company for their mental well-being and health. For more information on this, please click on the link below:

Top Tips: Levels Add Extra Space!

If you can add in levels to your C & C cage or hutch then this also gives your guinea pigs extra space. For example, if you have a C& C cage of 2 x 5 grids for three guinea pigs with an added ‘upstairs’ loft space (accessed using a ramp), then you are creating more space by extending upwards.

As an example of our current set up here with the HayPigs!:

We have a herd of seven guinea pigs in a double decker 7ft hutch (so that’s two levels at just over 2m long each). We also, on a daily basis, open up the floor space in their shed (that the hutch is positioned in) giving them a ‘third level floor area’ equal to (at the very least) the area of one level of their hutch. This is their ‘winter time’ arrangement and they will then, during the day in summer time, have access to a large secure enclosure for a run around on the grass in the garden.

Top Tips: More For The Boars

If you have a pairing of two male guinea pigs together, please do opt for a larger cage space. Whilst a bonded pair of males will usually get along just fine, if they are put into a small space it can lead to rising tensions and possibly even fighting. It’s important that, as much as they may love each other, they can also have space away from each other. If you have two males, go for a cage size appropriate for (at least!) 3 guinea pigs.
