About C&C Cages
So, what exactly is a C&C cage?
A C&C cage is a roomy, modular indoor home for guinea pigs, built from metal grids for the walls and a folded plastic base for the floor. It’s designed to give your piggies far more space and fresh air than most off-the-shelf cages, while still being easy for you to clean and customise.
What does “C&C” stand for?
“C&C” stands for Cubes & Correx / Coroplast – the “cubes” are the wire grids, and the correx / coroplast / coflute is the sturdy plastic sheet that forms the base tray. Together they make a kind of build-your-own piggy palace kit.
Cage Size and Space
How big does my guinea pig cage really need to be?
Welfare organisations and experienced piggy parents agree that most shop bought cages are too small for guinea pigs and only suitable as a temporary solution. They need room to zoom, popcorn and politely ignore each other when they feel like it. Think of the minimums as a baseline for welfare, and the real goal as “how big can we reasonably go in this room?” rather than “how small can we get away with?”.
As a very basic guide, a pair of guinea pigs need at least 1m² (10.5 square feet) of floorspace. That said, bigger is always better! This makes C&C cages a great option as they can be customized and extended to fit your room and make the most of the space available.
Extra floor space helps your guinea pigs display their natural behaviours, keeping them active and stimulated, which is great for both physical and mental health. A larger footprint to your enclosure also makes it easier to add hides, areas for hay, water stations and feeding areas without overcrowding their environment. This will help bonded pairs (or larger herds) stay harmonious, leading to happier, healthier guinea pigs.
How many guinea pigs can live in each C&C size (2x3, 2x4, 2x5,2x6)?
Quick rule of thumb; C&C cage sizes are usually talked about in grids (2x3, 2x4, etc.). Bigger is always better, but here’s a sensible “how many piggies per size” guide based on widely used welfare recommendations:
2x3 C&C (about 8 ft² / 0.75 m²)
Best for: 1 guinea pig, or a very temporary setup for 2 with lots of daily free-range time.
Think of this as a studio flat, not a forever home for a duo.
2x4 C&C (about 10.5 ft² / 1 m²)
Best for: 2 guinea pigs, can work for 3 smaller or very chilled pigs if they get regular floor time.
This is the classic “two piggy palace” size and a brilliant starting point.
2x5 C&C (about 13 ft² / 1.2 m²)
Best for: 3 guinea pigs comfortably, or 2 boars who like a little extra personal space.
Great if you’ve got a bonded trio or want to future‑proof for an extra rescue face.
2x6 C&C (about 16–17 ft² / 1.5–1.6 m²)
Best for: 4 guinea pigs, or slightly smaller groups of boars where you really want to minimise squabbles.
This is piggy luxury living – loads of zoomie room and space for cafés, nail bars and all the trimmings!
When designing a C&C don’t forget that you can always add a little extra floorspace by building up (with a loft) or even down (with a basement). Shallow ramps are ideal for helping with this but bear in mind elderly piggies may not be able to use them.
Do boars (male guinea pigs) need more space than sows (female guinea pigs)?
Boars are often big characters with big opinions, so a bit of extra elbow (or piggy‑butt) room helps them live together more peacefully. More floor space and clearly defined zones make it easier for boys to say “nope” and wander off rather than squabble. A top tip is to provide two of everything, so two food bowls, two hiding spots and two comfy fleece items so they are less likely to get possessive!
Why choose C&C Cages?
Why do so many piggy people rave about C&C cages?
Room for zoomies
Traditional “pet shop” cages are nearly always far too small, while C&C setups can easily meet and exceed modern welfare recommendations for floor space, especially for pairs and herds. More room means more zoomies, popcorning and chilled-out snoozing zones, which all translate into happier, healthier piggies.
Modular and customisable
Because C&C cages are made from grids and a coroplast/correx/corflute base, you can tweak the size, shape and layout to fit both your herd and your home. Want to add a loft, extend another grid, or split the space temporarily for intros or time-outs? Easy – you just move a few panels and ta da, new piggy floorplan.
Fresh air and easy cleaning
The open-grid sides give much better ventilation than many solid-sided cages, helping reduce ammonia build-up and keeping the environment fresher for sensitive little piggy lungs. The smooth plastic base is simple to line with fleece or bedding and wipe down, making full cleans quicker and less, well, fragrant for the humans!
Great for growing herds
C&C cages can grow with your piggy family: add more grids and extend, instead of replacing the whole setup every time you fall for “just one more” rescue piggy. You can even create temporary quarantine or divided areas with extra panels, which is super handy for bonding new arrivals safely and sensibly.
What are C&C cages made from, and are they safe if chewed?
You get sturdy metal grids plus a smooth coroplast (correx / corflute) base to create a comfy, flat floor. Normal little nibbles on edges are very common, so the trick is to keep them busy with mountains of hay and safe chews so the cage is the least interesting snack in the room. Additionally, nibble guards for your plastic bases are available.
Are C&C cages just for indoors, or can they go outside too?
C&C setups are designed as indoor homes where you can control temperature, predators and weather. In sheltered outbuildings they can still work, but your pigs will need stable temperatures, dry conditions and secure lids to stay snug and safe.
Safety and Welfare
Are C&C cages escape‑proof, especially for baby piggies?
Adult pigs are chunky little potatoes and standard bar spacing keeps them firmly on the right side of the grids. For teeny weeny babies, finer‑mesh panels or inserts are a wise idea until they grow into their paws. Check out the Ozzy C&C Baby Grids!
Do my guinea pigs need a lid on their C&C cage?
In a quiet, pet‑free room many piggy parents happily run open‑top cages because guinea pigs are not exactly world‑class high jumpers (a wall height of around 35cm (about 14 inches) is widely recommended to comfortably prevent escapes). However, if you have cats, prey‑driven dogs or enthusiastic toddlers, a secure lid is a must to keep curious noses out and piggies safe inside.
Do C&C cages help prevent problems like sore feet (bumblefoot)?
Yes, the solid, flat floor and soft bedding are much kinder on tiny toes than wire‑mesh bases (which aren’t recommended). Add good space and regular cleaning and you have a winning combo for happy feet and healthier skin.
How tall should the sides be, and do C&C grids tick the box?
For most piggies, the sides don’t need to be sky high, but they do need to be tall enough that even a spicy zoomer can’t hop out or use a hidey as a launch pad. A good rule of thumb for open top cages is around 35cm (about 14 inches) for the side height – that’s generally too tall for guinea pigs to clear, especially if the walls are smooth and unclimbable.
Standard C&C grids are usually around 35–36cm tall, so when you build a cage with full height panels and keep “stepping stones” (like houses and hay racks) a little away from the edges (or covered), they absolutely tick the box for everyday piggy escape prevention. If you’ve got a known Houdini or very athletic youngster, you can always add a lid or the odd grid above a tall accessory for extra peace of mind, but for most herds, normal C&C grid height is perfectly pig proof.
Cleaning, Bedding, and Layout
What bedding works best in a C&C cage?
Fleece, hay, woodshavings… it’s less “one size fits all” and more “what suits your pigs and your cleaning style?”. Lots of piggy parents use cosy fleece for lounging, then a more absorbent “kitchen” area where the real hay‑and‑poop party happens. At HayPigs! we like to dedicate at least a 3rd of the cage enclosure to a hay area and use fleece liners for the rest.
How often should I clean a C&C cage, and is it a faff?
A quick daily poop‑scoop and spot clean keeps whiffs at bay, then a full refresh once or twice a week usually does the trick. The open top and removable base actually make cleaning pretty straightforward, especially compared with deep hutches.
What is a good layout for my C&C cage?
Think in zones: a foodie kitchen/hay bar, a sleepy snug area with hides and tunnels, and a clear runway for zoomies. Separating these spaces makes cleaning easier and keeps your pigs busy pottering from one “room” to the next.
Flexibility, Setup, and Location
How easy is it to build a C&C cage?
If you can clip grids together and wield a cable tie, you’re halfway there. Most people can build and tweak their layout in an afternoon, with no power tools or DIY dramas! There are also lots of handy videos online if you need some help.
Can I make my C&C cage bigger later on?
Absolutely – that’s one of the big perks. Add extra grids, swap the base, build a loft or stretch the whole thing out and your pigs get a home that grows along with your herd.
Where’s the best place in my home to put a C&C cage?
Piggies love being part of the family gossip, so choose a calm but social spot away from drafts and direct sun. Avoid steamy kitchens and very noisy rooms, and aim for a space where you naturally walk past and say hello a lot.
Comparing C&C with other Cages
Are most shop‑bought cages really too small compared with C&C cages?
Many commercial “guinea pig cages” are more like starter sets and don’t meet common minimum space guidelines. A C&C set‑up usually gives far more length and width, which is brilliant for exercise, enrichment and piggy politics.
How does ventilation in a C&C cage compare to hutches or store-bought cages?
The open grids allow lovely airflow, helping to reduce humidity, ammonia build‑up and that classic “small animal” pong. That’s a big upgrade on enclosed hutches or plastic tubs where air can get hot and stuffy quickly.
Are C&C cages safe with children and other pets around?
With a secure lid and some ground rules, C&C cages work really well in busy family homes. Kids can watch and interact while piggies stay safely tucked away from over‑excited hands, paws and whiskers.
What are the main pros and cons of C&C versus wooden hutches or plastic cages?
C&C cages usually win on space, airflow, flexibility and ease of cleaning, and they look pretty stylish in your living space too. Hutches and plastic cages can be compact or weather‑resistant, but often compromise on running room and fresh air for your pigs.
