Guinea Pig Magazine - Our Story

It all started with a pigture…

Once upon a time, in a small hamlet in Devon, there lived a very handsome guinea pig called Piglet. He was loved beyond measure by his piggy slave (and our editor), Alison Byford.

One day, a photo of Piglet appeared in the reader’s pet section of Somerfield’s Magazine - the last issue they ever printed. When Alison turned the page and saw his little face smiling back at her, she was bursting with pride. But when she looked for somewhere else to send her photo, she was shocked: there wasn’t a single magazine in the world dedicated to guinea pigs.

Surely guinea pigs deserved better?

Alison had always worked hard - 19 years in the NHS supporting vulnerable people - but she was burnt out and desperate for change. With a diploma in proofreading, editing and a spark
of graphic design, she dared to ask: what if I created a guinea pig magazine myself?

She studied publishing by night while working by day, spoke with guinea pig keepers, rescues, breeders, and vets, and discovered just how much there was to say about these amazing little animals. Against all odds, Guinea Pig Magazine was born.

From the very beginning, Alison’s vision was clear:

  • A vibrant, colourful magazine with piggies on every page.
  • Varied, unbiased, and educational content.
  • A celebrity-style magazine where the stars are your pigs.

It wasn’t easy. Doubters said it could never work. Detractors misjudged it. And the statistics were scary: most magazines don’t make it past their first year. But GPM did - and it kept growing.

Today, Guinea Pig Magazine is the only printed magazine in the world dedicated solely to guinea pigs. It’s run by a passionate, multidisciplinary team of experts and piggy parents.

Every issue combines trusted vet and industry-led advice, real-life rescue stories, fun competitions, product reviews, and of course, your stories and photos.

And in every issue, you’ll still find a little photo of Piglet - because it really did all start with him.

Guinea Pig Magazine has always been, and always will be, a magazine for piggy people, made by piggy people.

What started with one cheeky guinea pig in Devon has grown into a global community of readers and their herds. And we’d love for you to be part of it.
