Going Away / Holidays

What should I do with my guinea pigs when I go on holiday?

Booked a relaxing break away? Don’t forget your little ones!

When you are going away for a weekend or perhaps a longer holiday, it’s important to have peace of mind that your guinea pigs will be well looked after. It’s also important for health and well-being that they receive proper care and attention. Here are some of our tips to help you (and your piggies!) enjoy that well-earned break!

Make a Plan

Your Options:

Friends, Family & Neighbours

Your nearest and dearest are often the first port of call when it comes to helping out with your animals. If your friends or family are not used to looking after guinea pigs, it’s a good idea for them to meet your piggies before you go away. Perhaps you could give tips on how to pick up your guinea pigs and hold them safely. You could also tell them about the different personalities of your VIPs (very important piggies!). It’s important that small furries are handled regularly so any illness or injury can be spotted. Changes in character can also be a sign that something is wrong, so knowing which piggies are naturally sociable and which are shy can be very useful information to share.

Pet sitters

While pet sitters are becoming more widely available and popular, those who deal with ‘small animals’ are still hard to find!  If you find a good sitter, keep hold of them and book well in advance (even before you book your holiday!). Pet sitters can work in different ways, either staying in your home (useful if you have lots of animals), or making visits to your house. A plus of having someone come to your home, is that you don’t have to move your guinea pigs from their usual environment, so it is less stressful for them. You will have to decide how many visits you need the sitter to make (if they are not ‘living in’) to ensure your piggies are getting enough attention.

Home Boarders / Guinea Pig Boarding Hotel

If you find a home boarder for your guinea pigs, then it’s a good idea to take some of their own cage accessories with them, so they have huts and hideys that look and smell familiar. A benefit of home boarding your piggies is that they should be kept under close watch, getting plenty of human interaction and a keen eye kept on their general well-being and health.

Make A List

Whoever looks after your guinea pigs while you are away, it can be really useful for them to have clear instructions and a checklist they can refer to. Everyone has a different daily ‘routine’ with their animals, so try to keep this routine similar while you are away as this will give comfort to them. You can list what food you usually feed and when, as well as any medication that might need administering. Also, provide the details of your usual vet in case there is an emergency. Make sure you have a good supply of your guinea pigs’ usual food and hay. It’s a good idea to label things to make it clear what is feeding hay or bedding hay, for example, or to show the difference between pellets and treats. Just because you know what everything is, don’t assume that your pet sitter will!

Before You Go

When we go away for a longer holiday, we like to give our piggies a health check before we go. This includes trimming their nails, checking their teeth, weighing them and making a note of weights. It’s a good idea to encourage your pet sitter or home boarder to repeat this check regularly, especially if you are away for a long time. Things like significant weight loss can be a sign of underlying illness, so it’s really useful to keep a check on this.
