Beaphar fly guard is a vet strength, easy-to-use spray to prevent and treat blow fly strike in guinea pigs and rabbits. One application will protect your pet for up to three months. Be sure to have some of this handy for those warm, fly-filled, summer months! (UK veterinary medicine marketed in accordance with Schedule 6 of the VMR.)

HOW TO USE
Weigh your pet carefully before application and use the following table to calculate the correct dose.

Rabbits and guinea pigs weighing 0.5–1kg: 5 pumps 
Rabbits and guinea pigs weighing 1–1.5kg: 7 pumps
Rabbits and guinea pigs weighing 1.5–3kg: 9 pumps
Rabbits and guinea pigs weighing >3kg: 15 pumps 

1. Ensure your guinea pig or rabbit is clean and dry.
2. Spray your pet from the middle of their back to the tip of their tail, from a distance of approximately 15cm.

It is recommended to start treating your rabbit or guinea pig in early summer, before flies are seen.

For continuous protection, reapply Beaphar Fly Guard every three months.

For Beaphar Fly Guard to be effective it is essential to ensure you remove any faeces from your rabbit or guinea pig’s bottom area before applying. To do this, carefully soak the affected area in a warm water solution and use an appropriate pet shampoo, such as Beaphar Guinea Pig and Rabbit Shampoo, to assist this process. Do not use human shampoo on your pet as this could irritate you their skin. 

Hutch hygiene is essential to reduce flies being attracted to your pet and their hutch. It is important to ensure you remove all soiled bedding at least once each week, and disinfect with a suitable product, such as Beaphar Deep Clean Disinfectant. During the summer months it may be necessary to remove any soiled bedding daily.
STORAGE
Store below 25°C out of direct sunlight. Protect from frost. Store in the original container. Keep away from food and drink, including animal feeding stuffs. Once empty, dispose of the bottle and packaging in the household rubbish.

How often should I use Beaphar Fly Guard?

Beaphar Fly Guard should be applied to clean fur once every three months to protect rabbits and guinea pigs from fly strike. We recommend applying the product before the summer period begins. Treated rabbits and guinea pigs should still be checked for signs of fly strike every day, and twice a day during the summer. Litter trays/toilet areas should also be cleaned every day to reduce the attraction of flies.

If my rabbit/guinea pig already has fly strike, is it too late to use Beaphar Fly Guard?

If you discover your rabbit or guinea pig has fly strike you must act quickly. You can use Beaphar Fly Guard on a fly struck pet, but you must take the following steps first:

  1. Clip off any matted fur or faecal material.
  2. Using a sponge, gently soak the affected area with warm, clean water. You can then use a specific small animal shampoo to clean the area.
  3. During cleaning, some of the maggots will fall away. Any that don’t can be carefully removed with tweezers. Once you’re satisfied all the maggots have been removed, carefully pat your pet dry with a towel.
  4. Once your pet is warm and dry, you can apply Beaphar Fly Guard. This will ensure maggots that may hatch from any remaining eggs are killed.
  5. You now need to completely clean and disinfect your rabbit/guinea pig’s house and litter tray. The litter tray will need emptying and disinfecting every day to reduce the attraction of flies. Your rabbit or guinea pig’s bottom should be checked twice a day and cleaned if necessary.

After following these steps, you should contact your vet for further advice.

If your pet has a heavy infestation of maggots, you will need to contact a vet IMMEDIATELY. If you can’t see the vet immediately, the above steps should still be followed. When you do visit the vet, take the Beaphar Fly Guard bottle with you to show them so your pet can be treated appropriately.
