Silkie Guinea Pig (also known as a Sheltie)
The Silkie guinea pig is also a long haired guinea pig, but in contrast to a Peruvian guinea pig, its hair grows back from its head and is known for being very soft and silky (hence the name!). Silkies are generally gentle and shy in nature and need regular grooming to keep their hair tidy. This grooming is not difficult to do and is usually a very pleasurable experience for both piggy and human, but it does require a level of commitment and diligence. For that reason we wouldn't recommend Silkies for kids, despite the fact that they are very easy going in temperament.
| APPEARANCE: Long sweeping hair that extends from the head. Their coat is very soft and silky.
| ALTERNATIVE NAMES: Also known as the 'Sheltie'.
| FUN FACTS: A Silkie guinea pig's hair grows back from its face (like a lion). Because of this, the hair can often form a tear drop shape when viewed from above.
| PERSONALITY: Known for being gentle and shy. Can become more playful and affectionate when handled regularly.
| HANDLING: Generally easy to handle due to their calm and gentle temperament. Can be a little timid.
| GROOMING: Very regular hair grooming is essential. Ideally every day to avoid the hair getting knotted and collecting debris. Regular trimming of the hair is also required as it can grow as much as an inch every month.
At HayPigs!® we have had two silkie guinea pigs, Nutella and Storm.
