Rex Guinea Pig
The Rex is another short-haired guinea pig but it deferrers quite distinctively from other short-haired piggies. A Rex’s fur is course, dense and woolly and its ears are long and droopy.
The reason for its extraordinary coat is because it has no Guard hair. Classically, most mammals have three types of hair in their fur; the Down hair (which is the undercoat if you will), the Awe hair (which is the middle layer) and the Guard Coat (the outer layer). Without Guard hair, the Rex’s fur stands on end to protect them from moisture and is course and wool-like to touch.
While The Rex is similar in appearance to a Teddy guinea pig, the Teddy has a much softer coat. That said, the Rex’s coat definitely has a beauty of its own and we are big fans!
